File Management and Operating System Use
Foundational systems fluency underpinning sustainable technology integration.
This domain addresses how digital resources are organised, retrieved and shared across learning environments.
Sustainable capability in this domain develops progressively over five phases.
Phase 1
Teachers use digital technologies for specific tasks and are able to locate and access digital files and software. Use is functional but remains discrete rather than integrated across learning environments.
Phase 2
Teachers locate and use digital lessons, references and supporting materials from shared servers or online repositories. Use is organised and supported, but remains largely structured around existing content rather than adaptive integration.
Phase 3
Digital environments are navigated with increasing fluency. Teachers multitask across platforms and retrieve a range of resources with ease, resulting in more responsive and efficient lesson flow.
Phase 4
Teachers design and maintain structured digital environments that support autonomy, secure back-up practices and the mentoring of colleagues and students in effective systems use.
Phase 5
Digital capability is embedded and self-sustaining. Teachers confidently manage and integrate systems, support others in effective practice, and operate within a coherent, secure digital environment.
Capability in practice
These indicators support reflection on current capability in this domain.
Phase 1
Replacement
-
I store files in clearly labelled folders on my computer.
-
I record students' assessment data in a document or spreadsheet.
-
I save and retrieve student work samples using a basic folder structure.
-
I rely on my own folders and a single device to organise and access my files.
Phase 2
Supported
-
I use digital resources created by others to support my teaching and planning.
-
I follow pre-made digital lessons as designed, without adapting their structure.
-
I locate references and supporting materials from shared drives or online sources.
Phase 3
Interactive
-
I switch between platforms and files confidently during instruction.
-
I locate and open resources quickly to respond to student needs.
-
I manage several digital tools at once without losing lesson flow.
-
I navigate digital environments efficiently and without disrupting lesson flow.
Phase 4
Blended
-
I use shared digital spaces where students and I store and access collective resources.
-
Students share files, images and information within shared digital environments.
-
I create opportunities for students to share their learning digitally with authentic audiences.
-
Digital systems support communication beyond the classroom.
Phase 5
Harmony
-
Students and I share responsibility for how our files, shared drives and digital spaces are organised and used.
-
We select technologies that best support learning.
-
We mentor one another in effective digital practices.
-
Our files and digital spaces are reliable, secure and embedded in everyday classroom practice.
